Types of Residential Roofing

There are five common types of residential roofs that you should consider when mulling a new residential roof or retrofit.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common type of roofing material in the US is asphalt shingles. They have been around since 1903 and are very reliable. It is also relatively inexpensive to install them and they last a long time. They are made of two different kinds of materials - organic and fiberglass. This design helps reflect the sunlight away from the house, which reduces air conditioning costs during summer. They are also resistant to wind and hail damage while providing additional waterproofing for your home. In addition to their cost-effective nature and durability, asphalt shingles come in a variety of colors.

Slate Shingles

Slate shingles are a type of roof for your house. They are made of concrete and can resist rot and fire. To keep them looking nice, you need to clean them regularly with water and soap. They last 100 years! Slate shingles are heavy so they require more work to install than light-weight roofs.

These shingles can be easily damaged if people walk on them. They are hard to maintain and clean because of this. These shingles are mostly on the East Coast, but sometimes they can be seen in states like Arkansas and Kentucky.

Wood Shakes

Cedar shake roofs are made of wood shingles. They have been around since the colonial era. They can withstand harsh weather and UV rays which saves on air conditioning costs, making them a good roof in areas with lots of sunlight.

Wood shingles are eco-friendly. They provide insulation and help cut down on energy costs. They are made of wood, but there is a coating that helps them to resist fire. There are many advantages to wood shakes. They are more expensive than asphalt shingles but they last longer and keep your home cool.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is a popular choice for many people. The market share of metal roofs has quadrupled over the last 10 years. They are low maintenance, lightweight, and environmentally friendly. Metal shingles are also durable, lasting 50+ years on average. The installation can be tricky so it is important to work with a roofer who has extensive experience with all types of metal roofs. At South Florida Commercial Roofers, we have been working with metal roofs for over 15 years.

Clay Tiles

Some roofing material is made from clay. It's molded clay that they heat up. They can change the temperature or time to make it thicker and different colors. Clay tiles also come in lots of sizes and shapes, including white, yellow, orange, and brown. Quality clay tiles will last for about 50-70 years and are fire-resistant.

These tiles are more commonly found in the Southwest. They fit in with homes that have Spanish architecture because they look like Spanish tiles. These tiles hang in parallel rows and overlap so water cannot come in. Clay tiles are not suitable for climates with changing weather because they erode easily and high winds can also affect them over time.

A roof can be made of different types of material. These materials vary in their design, function, and price. You should talk to our roofing professionals about this. They will help you decide which material is best for your house by looking at the three things: design, function, and price.

Design

A good roof will add to your home's value when you are selling it. There are different kinds of roofing, like terra cotta or cedar shakes. Roofers will help you pick roofing that fits your style.

Function

The roof protects your home from the sun, rain, and temperature. A good roof will work well even in windy areas and even in places that are very hot such as St. Louis. There are different things you can do to help a roof work better in all of these conditions.

Price

The cost for roofs is typically measured in roofing squares, which is about 100 square feet. Metal and asphalt shingles are among the cheapest options. You may want a roof that will last longer, like slate or tile. Our roofing contractors can help you choose the material that will work best for your price range.
